The air of China meets the coast of Florida.
Dragon shaped boats, colorful activities and a resolutely Asian ambience…The Dragon Boat Festival pays tribute to Chinese cultural treasures and welcomes more than 20,000 visitors every year. In 2013, it’s happening on Collins Avenue on October 5th.
Dragon Boat Festival
In Asia, the Dragon Boat Festival or the Duanwu Festival honors the memory of the former Chinese statesman and poet Qu Yuan, who committed suicide by drowning in the waters of the river Mi Lo.
A tragic story, but that does not retract the festive side of this celebration which takes place every year in Miami. [article_sponsor sponsor_id 5269]The festival takes places around a boat race, all painted in the colors of dragon skins – blue, red, yellow, white, and black for those who don’t sport vivacious colors. Previously practiced only in Asia, this competition combines tradition, teamwork and a strong enthusiasm and is rapidly gaining popularity.
The dragon boat, measuring over 12 meters long, can hold a team of twenty people, for a fun and challenging race of about 500 meters.
