Here are a few things we found labeled \u201cFrench<\/em>\u201d\u2026not really \u201cFrench<\/em>\u201d. Brace yourself for a sarcastic laugh the next time you hear one of these mentioned out loud.<\/p>\n

1. French Kiss<\/h2>\n

We, the French have no issues in being given credit for this one. Yay for the national pride. \ud83d\ude42 Come to think of it now, we don\u2019t really have an equivalent for this expression. We are not hand shakers or huggers and have lived by the tradition of \u201cfaire la bise<\/em>\u201d (air-kissing on both sides of the cheek). \u201cDid you French kiss her?<\/em>\u201d is \u201cTu lui as roul\u00e9 un patin?<\/em>\u201d which literally means: \u201cDid you roll her a skate?<\/em>\u201d But then again, who\u2019s complaining\u2026let\u2019s all call it a French kiss.<\/p>\n

2. French Fries<\/h2>\n

\"french-fries\"<\/a>Aha! Didn\u2019t know this, did you? French fries actually originated in Belgium and we, French call them \u201cfrites<\/em>\u201d. Maybe the US army got confused by the Belgians speaking French and brought the French fries home. Fortunately or not, the lame attempt of calling them \u201cFreedom fries\u201d never really took off. So, enjoy those \u201cFrench (not) fries<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

3. French Toast<\/h2>\n

\"art-bread-france-french-toast-funny-toast-2_r2_c2\"<\/a>Totally yummy, and our favorite, yet not really French. Apicus, a Roman from the 5th century is said to have come up with this toast.<\/p>\n

For us it is: stale bread brought back to life using eggs and sugar. We normally buy fresh baguettes during the week and by the time weekend arrives, the baguette is stale. These baguette left-overs are then ready to be savored as what is known to you as \u201cFrench toast<\/em>\u201d. In French it is called \u201cpain perdu<\/em>\u201d, which means lost or wasted bread. Assuming “bread<\/em>” was translated as “toast<\/em>“, how did “wasted<\/em>” become “French<\/em>“?<\/p>\n

4. French Bulldog<\/h2>\n

\"french-bulldog-cute\"<\/a>Where this came from, even we would like to know! Of all the dogs in the world, the breed called French is the bulldog?!!<\/p>\n

Is it because of their wrinkly faces or the fact that they are short and fat? It would make sense if they at least smoked…anyway, it is not a French dog. And it has Greece to thank for its origin.<\/p>\n

5. French Maid<\/h2>\n

From bad to worse and completely off the mark. French maid, again why French? Why not call her a cleaning lady \u201cfemme de chambre<\/em>\u201d? Call it like it is, or as we say \u201cLet\u2019s call a cat, a cat<\/em>\u201d. Assuming that the French maids from back in the 19th century wore the same uniform, the 20th century sure did some job at modernizing (read- shortening n tightening) it and overusing it in American media.<\/p>\n

6. French Letter<\/h2>\n

This one doesn\u2019t get any better, but sure does work as a sequential blow after the under dressed Halloween French maid. For those who didn\u2019t know, a French letter is condom. We are not too sure how to interpret this, nor whether we want to understand it, but anyway, Durex is an English brand. Nothing French about it. \ud83d\ude1b<\/p>\n

7. French Beans<\/h2>\n

We call them \u201charicots verts<\/em>\u201d (green beans). And just for the record, we only eat green beans that are cooked (not crunchy or uncooked ones). An American who cooks and eats the beans the way we do sure will be a pin in a haystack. Another cultural mystery!<\/p>\n

Granted there could be more additions to this \u201cFrench<\/em>\u201d trend like French windows or French roofs and so on. But we found the listed ones more amusing and intriguing. Who knew! The English language (mis)use of the \u201cFrench<\/em>\u201d label would become iconic and defining in the world.<\/p>\n
