The phrase literally translates to &#8211; <em>have the cockroach<\/em>. And all we wanted to imply was to- <em>be down in the dumps<\/em> or<em> have the blues<\/em>!<\/p>\n<h2>2. \u201cCasser les oreilles&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p><em>Breaking the ears<\/em> is what it literally means. We use this commonly with reference to loud or harsh noise, bad singers or a nagging people. To make the picture clearer we mean <em>highly irritating<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>3. &#8220;C&#8217;est la fin des haricots&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>When translated this simply means, <em>the end of the beans<\/em>. Yes, you guessed correctly. We do want to say <em>the last straw<\/em> in English or <em>that\u2019s the end of it<\/em>. Don\u2019t judge us, we take our love for beans very seriously!<\/p>\n<h2>4. \u201cDonner sa langue au chat&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>This means <em>to give your tongue to the cat<\/em> although we mean <em>to give up guessing an answer<\/em>. Honestly, don\u2019t give your tongue to the cat to understand the logic behind this one. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<h2>5. \u201cBoire comme un trou&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>This phrase means <em>to drink like a hole<\/em> and is supposed <em>to mean to drink a lot, like a bottomless well<\/em>. We, the French probably were drinking like a hole when we came up with the phrase.<\/p>\n<h2>6. \u201cDevenir ch\u00eavre&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>On a serious note, this stands for <em>to become a goat<\/em>. However, in plain English we mean <em>to be driven mad<\/em> and this phrase is said to have derived inspiration from goats and their short fuse.<\/p>\n<h2>7. &#8220;Les carottes sont cuites&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>It literally means <em>the carrots are cooked<\/em>, but we say run simply because the speaker means <em>that the outcome of the situation cannot be changed<\/em>!<\/p>\n<h2>8. \u201cArr\u00eate ton char!\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>You could feel really royal if you took this one for its literal meaning which is <em>to stop your chariots<\/em>. However, you are basically being told <em>to stop bluffing<\/em>. Nothing royal about that one. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<h2>9. \u201cPoser un lapin\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Someone was probably looking at a rabbit hole to escape when this phrase was thought of. Literal translation gives you <em>to leave a rabbit<\/em>, while actually meaning <em>to stand someone up<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>10. \u201cZut alors!\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Surprisingly, this phrase has no literal translation. Why then did we bring this up? Because the phrase means <em>holy smokes<\/em> or <em>darn<\/em>! What better way to conclude the list than with a darn!<\/p>\n<p>Every language has its own weirdness and funny little nuances that give it a unique charm. French, is no different.
