Nous l&#8217;avions fait en trois jours, au pas de course : une nuit \u00e0 Roanoke rend le rythme bien plus agr\u00e9able. C&#8217;est un aller simple tout trouv\u00e9 entre Atlanta, \u00e0 3 h 30 de Cherokee, et Washington, \u00e0 1 h 30 de Front Royal : environ 885 miles (1 420 km) de porte \u00e0 porte, dont l&#8217;essentiel sur des routes de cr\u00eate limit\u00e9es \u00e0 45 puis 35 mph. Il se fait aussi bien dans l&#8217;autre sens. D\u00e9but juillet, nous avons encore vu des rhododendrons blancs en fleur, et essuy\u00e9 plusieurs orages. Avant de partir, consultez la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blri\/planyourvisit\/roadclosures.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">page des fermetures de la Parkway<\/a> ; \u00e0 Shenandoah, le parc envoie ses alertes par SMS (envoyez SHENALERTS au 888777).<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"helene\" style=\"scroll-margin-top: 80px;\">Apr\u00e8s l&#8217;ouragan Helene : ce qui est rouvert, ce qui ne l&#8217;est pas<\/h2>\n<p>Fin septembre 2024, Helene a d\u00e9vers\u00e9 jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 30 pouces (76 cm) de pluie par endroits sur l&#8217;ouest de la Caroline du Nord. Les 469 miles de la Parkway ont \u00e9t\u00e9 ferm\u00e9s, et le National Park Service (NPS) a recens\u00e9 une soixantaine de glissements de terrain, surtout entre Linville Falls et le Mount Mitchell. La route a rouvert par tron\u00e7ons. Le 5 octobre 2026, le NPS annon\u00e7ait que 458 miles \u00e9taient de nouveau ouverts et qu&#8217;on pouvait rouler sans interruption de la James River, en Virginie, jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 Little Switzerland, en Caroline du Nord.<\/p>\n<p>D\u00e9but novembre 2026, il restait ferm\u00e9 :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>le tron\u00e7on du milepost 344,2 (route NC 80) au milepost 355,3 (Mount Mitchell State Park), o\u00f9 toute activit\u00e9 est interdite ; le NPS vise une r\u00e9ouverture fin 2026 ;<\/li>\n<li>le pont sur la James River (MP 63,5 \u00e0 63,9), en travaux depuis septembre 2025, avec un d\u00e9tour balis\u00e9 ;<\/li>\n<li>\u00e0 Linville Falls, le centre d&#8217;accueil (d\u00e9truit), le camping, l&#8217;aire de pique-nique et une partie des sentiers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ailleurs, des chantiers imposent encore des passages sur une seule voie. V\u00e9rifiez l&#8217;\u00e9tat de chaque tron\u00e7on la veille sur la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blri\/planyourvisit\/roadclosures.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">page des fermetures du NPS<\/a>, mise \u00e0 jour chaque matin.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"jour-1\" style=\"scroll-margin-top: 80px;\">Jour 1 : de Cherokee \u00e0 Blowing Rock<\/h2>\n<p>La Parkway est jalonn\u00e9e de bornes, les mileposts (MP), num\u00e9rot\u00e9es de 0 au nord, \u00e0 Rockfish Gap, jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 469 au sud, \u00e0 Cherokee : dans notre sens, elles d\u00e9croissent. Comptez environ 215 miles (345 km) pour cette journ\u00e9e, d\u00e9tour compris, et un peu plus de 6 heures de volant sans les arr\u00eats.<\/p>\n<h3>Cherokee, l&#8217;entr\u00e9e sud<\/h3>\n<p>La veille, gagnez Cherokee : environ 165 miles (265 km) et 3 h 30 de route depuis Atlanta. La Parkway commence juste au nord de la ville, sur la route 441, pr\u00e8s du centre d&#8217;accueil d&#8217;Oconaluftee, qui appartient au parc national des Great Smoky Mountains : pour vous y garer plus d&#8217;un quart d&#8217;heure, il faut une vignette de stationnement (5 dollars la journ\u00e9e). La vue porte sur plusieurs cha\u00eenes des Appalaches. Un sentier m\u00e8ne au sommet, \u00e0 6 273 pieds (1 912 m) : un mile (1,6 km) aller-retour et 460 pieds (140 m) de d\u00e9nivel\u00e9, goudronn\u00e9 sur les premiers 0,2 mile, puis caillouteux et raide par endroits. La for\u00eat d&#8217;\u00e9pic\u00e9as rouges et de sapins de Fraser fait penser au Canada ; depuis la fin des ann\u00e9es 1970, un insecte venu d&#8217;ailleurs, le puceron lanig\u00e8re du sapin, y tue les sapins. Le sentier de Craggy Pinnacle, 20 minutes de marche \u00e0 travers des tunnels de rhododendrons, m\u00e8ne \u00e0 une vue \u00e0 360 degr\u00e9s. Tant que le tron\u00e7on suivant n&#8217;a pas rouvert, rebroussez chemin jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 Asheville (sortie de la route 70, MP 382,8), prenez l&#8217;Interstate 40 vers l&#8217;est jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 Marion, puis la route 221 vers le nord jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 Linville Falls : environ 78 miles (125 km) et 2 heures, contre une cinquantaine de miles par la Parkway. Si le NPS a tenu son calendrier, vous pourrez de nouveau filer tout droit.<\/p>\n<h3>Linville Falls<\/h3>\n<p>La petite route d&#8217;acc\u00e8s \u00e0 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blri\/planyourvisit\/linville-falls-mp-316.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Linville Falls<\/a><\/strong> (MP 316,4), longue de 1,5 mile, a rouvert en mai 2026, mais le centre d&#8217;accueil a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9truit et le NPS pr\u00e9voit de reconstruire le site \u00e0 partir de 2027. La rivi\u00e8re Linville y franchit deux chutes avant de s&#8217;enfoncer dans les gorges. D\u00e9but 2026, le sentier d&#8217;Erwins View (1,6 mile aller-retour, 2,6 km), qui dessert quatre points de vue sur les chutes et les gorges, \u00e9tait ouvert ; on peut aussi y acc\u00e9der par le parking du Forest Service sur Old NC 105. Au MP 304, la Parkway contourne le flanc de Grandfather Mountain sur le <strong>Linn Cove Viaduct<\/strong> : un pont de b\u00e9ton de 1 243 pieds (379 m), termin\u00e9 en 1983, dernier maillon de la route, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 inaugur\u00e9e en entier en 1987. Son centre d&#8217;information est ferm\u00e9, mais le parking reste ouvert. Nuit \u00e0 Blowing Rock, petite ville \u00e0 la sortie de la route 321 (MP 291,8).<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"jour-2\" style=\"scroll-margin-top: 80px;\">Jour 2 : de Blowing Rock \u00e0 Roanoke<\/h2>\n<p>Comptez environ 185 miles (300 km) et 5 h 30 \u00e0 6 h 15 de volant : le NPS compte en moyenne une heure pour 30 miles sur la Parkway.<\/p>\n<h3>Au-dessus des nuages<\/h3>\n<p>Partez t\u00f4t : vers 9 heures, depuis un point de vue \u00e0 l&#8217;est de Blowing Rock (vers le MP 290), nous dominions une mer de nuages accroch\u00e9e aux vall\u00e9es. Jeffress Park<\/strong> est le d\u00e9part du <strong>Cascades Trail<\/strong>, une courte boucle comment\u00e9e qui descend en escaliers jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 une cascade. Il reste la maison, le grenier et la source couverte d&#8217;une ferme de 125 acres (50 ha). Au MP 213, le <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blri\/planyourvisit\/blue-ridge-music-center-mp-213.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blue Ridge Music Center<\/a>, ouvert de 10 h \u00e0 17 h, propose en saison, chaque jour de midi \u00e0 15 h, des concerts gratuits de musique des montagnes : une pause toute trouv\u00e9e \u00e0 la mi-journ\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<h3>Mabry Mill<\/h3>\n<p>Au MP 176,2, <strong>Mabry Mill<\/strong> est notre image pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9e du voyage : un moulin de bois au bord de son \u00e9tang, avec sa roue \u00e0 aubes. Ed Mabry et sa femme Lizzy y ont moulu le ma\u00efs, sci\u00e9 le bois et tenu une forge pendant trois d\u00e9cennies. Un court sentier relie le moulin, la scierie, la forge et une cabane de rondins. Le restaurant et la boutique voisins sont ferm\u00e9s pour travaux : leur nouvel exploitant pr\u00e9voit de rouvrir au printemps 2027. En attendant, Meadows of Dan et Floyd, tout proches, ont de quoi manger.<\/p>\n<h3>Roanoke<\/h3>\n<p>Il reste environ 1 h 45 de route. Quittez la Parkway au MP 121,4 par la route 220 vers le nord : le centre de Roanoke est \u00e0 un quart d&#8217;heure. Nuit \u00e0 Roanoke.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"jour-3\" style=\"scroll-margin-top: 80px;\">Jour 3 : de Roanoke \u00e0 Rockfish Gap<\/h2>\n<p>Une journ\u00e9e plus courte en voiture, environ 130 miles (205 km) et 4 heures de volant, qui laisse le temps de monter \u00e0 Sharp Top.<\/p>\n<h3>Peaks of Otter et Sharp Top<\/h3>\n<p>Rejoignez la Parkway au nord-est de la ville par la route 460 (MP 106) : Peaks of Otter est \u00e0 50 minutes du centre de Roanoke. Au MP 85,6, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blri\/planyourvisit\/peaks-of-otter-mp-85-6.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peaks of Otter<\/a><\/strong> r\u00e9unit un centre d&#8217;accueil, le lac Abbott et le <a href=\"https:\/\/peaksofotter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peaks of Otter Lodge<\/a>, h\u00f4tel historique de 63 chambres avec restaurant, ouvert du printemps \u00e0 la fin de l&#8217;automne. Le sentier de <strong>Sharp Top<\/strong> part en face du centre d&#8217;accueil, de l&#8217;autre c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la Parkway, et monte au sommet, \u00e0 3 875 pieds (1 181 m) : 1,5 mile (2,4 km) et 1 300 pieds (400 m) de mont\u00e9e raide. Le NPS conseille deux heures pour monter et une pour descendre ; il n&#8217;y a pas d&#8217;eau au sommet, d&#8217;o\u00f9 la vue porte \u00e0 360 degr\u00e9s sur le Pi\u00e9mont et la vall\u00e9e de la Shenandoah. En temps normal, un court sentier passe sous le pont jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 une \u00e9cluse restaur\u00e9e de l&#8217;ancien canal James River and Kanawha. Le pont est ferm\u00e9 pour r\u00e9novation depuis septembre 2025, et les sentiers du site avec lui : le NPS vise une r\u00e9ouverture fin 2026. La boucle par les rochers (1,4 mile aller-retour, 2,3 km, environ une heure) demande de jouer des mains sur la cr\u00eate et m\u00e8ne \u00e0 une vue \u00e0 360 degr\u00e9s : \u00e0 \u00e9viter si vous avez le vertige, et dangereuse par temps humide. L&#8217;autre chemin (1,1 mile aller-retour, 1,8 km) m\u00e8ne, sans escalade, \u00e0 un point de vue sur la vall\u00e9e. Byrd. Au mile 41,7, pr\u00e8s de Skyland, la route atteint son point le plus haut, 3 680 pieds (1 122 m). Apr\u00e8s le tunnel de Marys Rock (mile 32,2), la descente finit au centre d&#8217;accueil de Dickey Ridge (mile 4,6), ouvert toute l&#8217;ann\u00e9e, puis \u00e0 l&#8217;entr\u00e9e nord, \u00e0 Front Royal. Le parc de Shenandoah co\u00fbte 30 dollars par v\u00e9hicule, valables sept jours, et n&#8217;accepte plus les esp\u00e8ces : carte bancaire seulement. Le pass annuel du parc vaut 55 dollars. Le pass <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/planyourvisit\/passes.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">America the Beautiful<\/a><\/strong>, \u00e0 80 dollars pour les citoyens et r\u00e9sidents des \u00c9tats-Unis, n&#8217;est donc rentable que si vous visitez d&#8217;autres parcs dans l&#8217;ann\u00e9e. Vos proches venus de France paient le tarif normal \u00e0 Shenandoah : le suppl\u00e9ment de 100 dollars impos\u00e9 aux non-r\u00e9sidents ne touche que onze parcs, dont aucun de ce circuit.
