Le Pape Pie X d\u00e9cidait une trentaine d\u2019ann\u00e9e plus tard de construire un sanctuaire national aux Etats-Unis en hommage \u00e0 Marie et contribuait personnellement \u00e0 sa construction. Les premi\u00e8res pierres \u00e9taient pos\u00e9es en 1920, et la premi\u00e8re Messe f\u00fbt c\u00e9l\u00e9br\u00e9e 4 ans plus tard pour P\u00e2ques.<\/p>\n<p>En 1990, le Pape Jean-Paul II \u00e9levait la National Shrine au rang de <strong>Basilique<\/strong>, reconnaissant par l\u00e0 l\u2019importance historique, la dignit\u00e9 et la place sp\u00e9ciale de cette \u00e9glise aux Etats-Unis. Enfin le Pape Beno\u00eet XVI lui accordait une <strong>Rose D\u2019or<\/strong>, peu avant son retrait de ses fonctions, destin\u00e9e ainsi \u00e0 honorer ce sanctuaire marial.<\/p>\n<h2>Pas uniquement une \u00e9glise<\/h2>\n<p>La basilique ne ressemble \u00e0 aucune autre. Elle est une esp\u00e8ce d\u2019hybride entre les styles roman (avec les pierres sculpt\u00e9es) et byzantin (avec les mosa\u00efques et le marbre), et elle se compose de pierres, briques, tomettes et mortier.<\/p>\n<p>Elle comporte la plus grande <strong>collection d\u2019art eccl\u00e9siastique contemporain<\/strong> au monde, ainsi que l\u2019une des plus grandes mosa\u00efques \u00e0 l\u2019image du Christ du monde, avec plus de 4,000 couleurs et formes.<\/p>\n<p>La basilique comprend une crypte, un \u00e9tage, et plus de 70 chapelles et sanctuaires, situ\u00e9es au rez-de-chauss\u00e9e et \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tage.
